This report, by the Centre for International Economics, analyses the benefits and costs of alternative urban growth paths for Sydney. The study assesses three scenarios for the benefits and costs associated with accommodating population growth in Sydney. It considers aspects such as the cost of infrastructure, environmental impacts and ‘transformation benefits’. This report formed an important part of the evidence base for the policy approach in the new Metropolitan Plan.

World’s leading practice in emissions reduction policy
This report by Arup examines worlds leading best practice in greenhouse gas emissions reduction policy. The study involved an analysis of spatial planning measures implemented by governments in various cities around the world to reduce emissions. A desk-top review of fifteen city plans was conducted, as well as a more detailed review of eight of these cities' adaptation policies and strategies, for their relevance and transferability to Sydney. The study’s findings have informed the new Metropolitan Plan

Greenhouse gas emissions snapshot
This report by Arup was conducted to provide a snapshot of greenhouse gas emissions from the Sydney metropolitan area. The study considers Sydney's emissions in terms of: magnitude; distribution across industry sectors; spatial distribution by local government area and; contribution of various types of urban form. This study informed Sydney’s new Metropolitan Plan and it represents Sydney’s first inventory of greenhouse gas emissions specifically tailored to assist the land use planning process.

A study undertaken in 2010 by the University of Western Sydney’s Urban Research Centre was commissioned by the Department of Planning to understand the state of knowledge around the land use and value of agriculture in the Sydney Basin. The study highlights the importance of transparent and replicable methodologies for collecting reliable data on Sydney’s agriculture.
